CREATING PRINT READY ARTWORK?

Setting up the file – PDF compliant files are industry standard and proper setup will help eliminate problems with color, font and trapping variables.

Layout:

  • 1-up Single Page/Two Page Spreads: Use this layout if your project is a catalog, newspaper or will require saddle-stitching.
  • Single Page: Use this layout for spiral bound or loose leaf projects.
  • Use USPS guidelines for design if you project includes mailing. More information here: http://about.usps.com/publications/pub600/pub600_006.htm
  • If you are not familiar with USPS print guidelines, contact your Plumb Marketing representative for additional template information.

Color:

  • Set your file to print in CMYK color with 300 dpi resolution.

Fonts:

  • Be sure to embed fonts in your PDF file. Note: Fonts used by printers are font families and require different fonts for each type face (e.g. bold, italicized, etc.)

Bleeds:

  • Pictures and background extending to the papers edge is considered a bleed. Setup your project so that these extend out 1/8 an inch and include crop marks on all corners to the final intended cut size. Example:
Notice the additional space included (typically about 1/8-1/4”) around the final picture edge and the lines at the corner of the page. These are crop marks and the color that extends into that area is called a bleed. Making sure you have these included with your file will ensure you have a piece that is formatted for print accurately and prints the way you envision when you designed it.
